Define infectious disease and communicable disease. infectious disease= the growth/spread of organisms communicable disease= passed from one human/species to another human/species
Describe the routes of disease transmission. Indirect= human to human Direct= contaminated surface airborne= microdroplets foodborne= contaminated food vector borne- insect.
Steps to prevent and/or deal with an exposure to hepatitis, tuberculosis, and HIV/AIDS. dont have to ability to become immune to HIV/AIDS - Prevention methods (PPE, Infectious fluids, disposal of sharps) Dealing with it (testing, compliance, infection control plan, desiganted officer)
Know the standard precautions used in treating patients to prevent infection. -proper PPE use -treat all fluids as infectious -ALWAYS keep your safety first -proper use/disposal of sharps - Employer responsibility- NFPA 1581
Describe the steps to take for personal protection from airborne and bloodborne pathogens. Masks, gloves, respirator, face shield
Explain proper handwashing techniques. - rinse, soap, scrub for 20 seconds, rinse under water, clean towel
List the ways immunity to infectious diseases is acquired. - vaccinations -building a tolerance (antibodies)
Explain postexposure management of exposure to patient blood or body fluids - hand over care to another EMS provider -Let it BLEED, then rinse (eyes for 20 mins) Contact designated officer follow departments infection control plan postexposure report
Describe the steps necessary to determine scene safety and to prevent injury. - Hazmats, electricity, fire, vehicle crashes, -scene size up (BSI. Safe? # of Pts? NOI? Cspine? Age, Gender, race, destress? Names? Locat,iion? Time? Pt AO x___
Explain the care of critically ill and injured patients. Tell the Pt what your doing, respect -avoid sad comments -orient them -be honest but not shocking -initial refusal -allow for hope -tell family -allow adults to help with peds -let family hold deceased pt -tell abt death in private
Describe issues concerning care of the dying patient, death, and the grieving process of family members. Stages of grief: Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression, Acceptance family could become violent, experience anxiety Say things like, "Im so sorry"
Know the physiologic, physical, and psychological responses to stress. psych: fear, dullness, depression, guilt, anger, irritability, frustration physical: increased resp rate and heart rate, increased blood pressure, dilated blood vessels, clammy skin, dilated pupils, tensed muscles, increased blood-glucose levels, etc
Describe posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and steps that can be taken, including critical incident stress management, to decrease the likelihood that PTSD will develop. PTSD is when stress comes after the incident to present- manage stress in correct ways before they build up and come back later in life
Identify the emotional aspects of emergency care. prolonged physical stress, lots of stress, act calm and keep responsibility, be professional, manage stress with healthy tactics.
Recognize the stress inherent in many situations, such as mass-casualty scenes. Mass casualty scenes can be extremely stressful and traumatic for EMS. Seeing lots of medical emergencies and the heavy feelings in the air makes EMS feel for them.
Recognize the possibility of violent situations and the steps to take to deal with them. possible violent: past history, posture, vocals, physical, poor impulse control, Traid, instability, violent tattoos, substance abuse, hearing voices, depression, diagnosed illness LEOs first
Describe how to handle behavioral emergencies. -look at: their response, outward signs, oriented, dressed, stiff/relaxed, self harm, facial expressions -remain calm, understanding, protect yourself and your partner first, be an active listener
Discuss workplace issues such as cultural diversity, sexual harassment, and substance abuse. cultural diversity- Accept and benefit from it your effectiveness- learn to communicate with all substance abuse- avoid sexual harassment- Quid Pro Quo, Hostile environment, adversarial relationships
Demonstrate the steps necessary to manage a potential exposure situation. - hand over care to another EMS provider -bleed? wash! Tell designated officer testing, compliance. Follow protocols!
