Earth's Water and Atmosphere
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| wind | The horizontal movement of air. |
| density | A measure of how much mass (stuff) is packed into a certain amount of space. |
| Convection (convection cycle) | Is the way heat moves through liquids and gases. It happens when warm parts of a liquid or gas rise, and cooler parts sink, creating a cycle. |
| conduction | The process by which heat is transferred from one object to another through direct contact. |
| radiation | The transfer of energy through space by electromagnetic waves, like light or heat from the sun. |
| Coriolis Effect | The way Earth’s rotation makes winds and ocean currents curve instead of moving in a straight line. |
| Kinetic energy | The energy an object or particle has because it is moving. |
| Thermal energy | The energy that comes from the movement of tiny particles in a substance. |
| Water cycle (hydrological cycle) | The process in which water moves between the air, land, and oceans. |
| sublimation | The process where a solid changes directly into a gas without first becoming a liquid. |
| transpiration | The process where plants release water vapor into the air through tiny openings in their leaves. |
| evaporation | The process where liquid water turns into water vapor (a gas) and rises into the air. |
| condensation | The process where water vapor (a gas) cools down and turns back into liquid water. |
| precipitation | When water falls from the sky to the Earth in different forms such as rain, snow, sleet, or hail. |
| deposition | When water vapor (a gas) changes directly into a solid, like ice, without becoming a liquid first. |
| runoff | The movement of water over the surface of the land, usually after rain or snow has melted. |
| Infiltration | When water from rain or snow seeps down into the ground. It moves through the soil and can fill spaces between rocks or dirt. |
