Plant and Animal Cell Organelles

| cell membrane | controls what goes in and out of the cell |
| cell wall (plant only) | rigid layer surrounding a plant cell that provides structure, support, and shape |
| nucleus | controls the activities of the cell |
| cytoplasm | thick gel-like fluid inside the cell between the nucleus and the cell membrane |
| Mitochondria | produces the energy needed for the cell to carry out its functions |
| chloroplast (plant only) | contains chlorophyll and makes food from sunlight |
| vacuole | storage area for the cell (mostly water). larger in plants than in animals |
