Water Cycle and Properties terms for quiz

| cohesion | water attracted to water; causes surface tension |
| hydrosphere | all the water in and on the earth |
| polarity | refers to the attracted ends of water molecules; positive ends attract to negative ends |
| permeable | allows water and gas to flow through |
| high specific heat | keeps water and gas from flowiing through |
| solvent | part of a solution that does the dissolving |
| urban water cycle | process by which humans extract, process, distribute, and consume water |
| intereption | when precipitation doesn't reach the ground because leaves, buildings, and other objects get in the way |
| runoff | water that flows downslope along a surface |
| precipitation | condensed water moves from the atmosphere to the hydrosphere or to the solid earth |
| evaporation | water moves from the hydrosphere or the solid earth up to the atmosphere |
| infiltration | precipitation goes into the ground and becomes groundwater |
| percolation | the rate that water runs through the ground |
| transpiration | when plants absorb water and then release it back into the atmosphere through their leaves |
| condensation | when water changes from a gas to a liquid. Energy must be removed from the water molecules. Results in increased air temperatures. |
