SCI8-Cycles

Carbon, nitrogen, and rock cycles (EPISD 8th grade)

QuestionAnswer
Rock cycle Cycle of the forces on the earth that destroy, change, and reform rocks
Sedimentary rock Rocks formed through erosion of igneous and metamorphic rock
Metamorphic Rocks formed through heat and pressure
Magma Molten rock that makes up the earth’s mantle
Igneous Rock formed from the crystallization of magma
Nitrogen cycle The process through which nitrogen is used and returned to the atmosphere
Nitrogen Makes up about 78 percent of the air
Free nitrogen Nitrogen not combined with other atoms
Nitrogen fixation The process by which nitrogen is made usable by organisms
Lightning Fixes nitrogen which is brought to the soil by rain
Nodules Bumps on the roots of legumes (clover, beans, peanuts, and etc…)
Decomposers Break down animal waste and dead animals and release free nitrogen into air
Bacteria Live in nodules and perform nitrogen fixation
Carbon cycle System that transfers carbon between different parts of the environment
Volcanic activity Releases carbon dioxide into the air through the gasses of magma
Photosynthesis Process through which plants change water and carbon dioxide into glucose and oxygen
Oxygen Animals breath in _______ and create carbon dioxide
Carbon dioxide Plants take in _____ and make oxygen
Plants When these decay it releases carbon dioxide which is released into the atmosphere
Human activity Burning fossil fuels in factories creates carbon dioxide and is an example of this
Global warming A slight increase of the earth’s atmospheric temperature
Greenhouse gases Gases in the atmosphere that trap solar energy

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
