Social studies (Sociological) definitions - Leaving Cert Home Economics

| Society- | A group of people who share a common way of life, e.g. Irish society. |
| Social groups- | Subgroups of people within a society who share a common purpose. - Primary social group - a small group of people with permanent relationships and close personal ties. - Secondary social groups - a large group of people with less permanent/ impersonal |
| Kinship- | Blood relationships that only occur between family members. |
| Norms- | Normal patterns of behaviour that individuals are expected to follow within a society. |
| Values- | The attitudes and beliefs held by a society regarding what is right and wrong. These are reinforce by laws of a country. |
| Mores- | The norms, values and customs that are considered important by society. |
| Socialisation- | The process whereby an individual learns appropriate norms, values, behaviour and social skills in order to behave in a socially acceptable standard. - primary - within the family - secondary - outside the family. |
| Culture- | The way of life of a society, which includes language, music, customs, norms, values and skills, passed from one generation to the next. |
| Role- | The expected of behaviour of an individual according to their status or position in society. |
| Status- | The position held by an individual in society. Often defined by amount respect an prestige shown. Status can be: - ascribed: given at birth - achieved : gained through an individuals own efforts. |
| Socio-economic grouping- | Classification of individuals according to their economic and social position. Can be based off of income, education and occupation. Lower, Middle and Higher class. |
| Social mobility- | Movement between socio-economic groupings. This may improve due to educational progression. |
| Social instistutions- | Organised social arrangements found in many societies. |
| Social changes- | Changes that take place in society due to major developments. |
