Quake Terms

QuestionAnswer
Epicenter The spot on the earth's surface above the focus.IT is the quakes address.
Focus Location of the rupture or break on the fault.
Fault Crack in the earth crust-along which there is movement
Primary wave (p wave),fastes moving @ 5miles/sec move under the earth's surface (stays in crust) rock particles move back and forth at right angles to direction the wave traveles.
Secondary wave also called shear waves- move under the earth's crust (stay in crust) rock particles move back and forth at right angle to direction the wave travels.
l-wave (L waves)travel from the focus of the quake directy to the suface-epicenter move along surface of crust like wavest swells on the ocean.
