Matter

Properties of matter and changes in matter

TermDefinition
mass the amount of matter in a substance; measured in grams or kilograms
matter any type of material that has mass and takes up space; made up of atoms
temperature a measure of how fast its particles are moving
texture the surface structure that you can feel by touching a material
volume the amount of space an object takes up; measured in liters or milliliters
weight the force of gravity pulling on the object
chemical change process of change in matter that changes the identity of the matter; changes it into different substance with different properties
chemical reaction the process of one or more substances changing into one or more new substances
dissolve when something breaks up into tiny particles so small that they can't even be seen with a microscope
heat the flow of energy that goes into raising the temperature of an object
mixture a combination of different materials are put together, but each material keeps its own properties; different parts of the mixture can be separated from the rest of the materials
physical change a change in matter that does not affect the type of matter; the chemical properties of the substance do not change
pressure the amount of how much something is pushing on something else; the amount of force over a given area
solution a mixture in which substances are spread out evenly and do not settle to the bottom of the container
