Science Vocabulary

Vocabulary on Digestive Systems

QuestionAnswer
Digestive system A group of organs that work together to break down food into nutrients that the body can use.
Digestive tract The group of organs that food passes through while traveling through the digestive system.
Enzyme Substance produced by the body that breaks nutrients into smaller particles the body can use.
Esophagus The passageway from the mouth to the stomach.
Gall bladder The organ that stores bile produced by the liver.
Large intestine Organ where water is absorbed from food and waste is turned into solid.
Liver The largest organ in the body, produces bile.
Mechanical digestion Breaking, crushing and mashing food.
Pancreas The organ that produces enzymes and hormones to regulate sugar levels.
Small intestine The organ that food enters when leaving the stomach, where most of the nutrients from the food are absorbed into the bloodstream.
Chemical digestion The process of breaking down large food molecules into nutrients by using enzymes and acids.
Stomach The organ that breaks that food down into a liquid using muscles and enzymes.
