| articulation | physiological process of producing consonants in speech and singing |
| hard palate | anterior bony portion of the roof of the mouth |
| soft palate | muscular membrane (velum) in the roof of the mouth behind the hard palate |
| opera | theatrical work using scenery, props, costumes, lighting, plane text, vocal and instrument music with staged dramatization, usually sung throughout |
| oratorio | large composition based on religious text for soloists chorus and instrumentalists and usually concretized rather than staged |
| recitative | sung music that closely follows the inflection, tempi, and phrasings of speech and is used to convey aromatic action prior to an aria or a composition for vocal ensemble |
| sprechstimme | a type of exaggerated vocalization halfway between song and speech |
| tessitura | particular range of a composition (song or aria) that is most consistently used as opposed to the total range or compass of a composition; also refers to the comfortable singing range of the voice |
| vocal range | the compass of pitches (low to high) capable of being performed by a particular voice type |
| timbre | distinctive quality and behavior of a tone, resulting from the combined effect of the fundamental and its overtones |
| volumes | "loudness of sound" best measured in terms of acoustic energy or intensity |
| piano | softly; also used as a name for the pianoforte keyboard instrument |
| mezzo piano | moderately soft; less soft than piano |
| mezzo forte | moderately loud; less loud than forte |

| epigastrium | triangular portion of the high abdominal area at the base of the sternum and directly below the ribs |
| adduction | drawing together of the vocal folds or closing of the glottis in the act of phonation |
| abduction | drawing apart of the vocal folds from the mid-line position or opening of the glottis, as occurs with breathing |
| portamento | connection between two pitches produced by maintaining the vowel performed on the first pitch while slurring, usually at the last moment, to the second |
