Hydrosphere Basics

water terms, definitions, etc.

TermDefinition
Salt water Salty water or salt that has been added to water.
Fresh water Water that is not salty, and is suitable for drinking.
Polar ice cap Dome-shaped sheets of ice found near the North and South Poles.
Glacier A slowly moving mass made of ice.
Groundwater Water held underground.
Atmosphere The envelope of gases surrounding the earth or another planet.
Reservoir A large natural or artificial lake used as a source of water supply.
Lakes A large body of water surrounded by land.
Rivers A large natural stream of water flowing in a channel to a lake, or another such stream.
