Essential Vocabulary
| Term | Definition |

| Luminosity | the measure of how much energy or light a star shines from its surface |
| Apparent Brightness | how bright a star appears to us from a distance |
| Universe | everything that exist including all matter and energy, the planets, stars, galaxies, and all contents of space |
| Solar System | the sun and everything that orbits or travels around the sun. |
| Sun | the star that Earth ( and other planets in our solar system) orbits around that gives Earth heat, light, and energy. |
| Planet | a large round object in space that Does Not give off light and that orbits a star |
| Star | a ball of burning gas in space that gives off light |
| shadow | the dark area created by an object that stops light |
| orbit | the path an object follows around another object |
| axis | an invisible line around which an object rotates or spins |
| rotation | when a planet or moon turns all the way around or spins on its axis at one time |
| revolution | when a planet or moon travels around the body it is orbiting one time |
| pattern | a set of objects or events that are repeated regularly |
| constellation | a cluster of stars in the sky that are grouped together in a particular pattern or shape, and have been given a name |
