Essential Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Luminosity the measure of how much energy or light a star shines from its surface
Apparent Brightness how bright a star appears to us from a distance
Universe everything that exist including all matter and energy, the planets, stars, galaxies, and all contents of space
Solar System the sun and everything that orbits or travels around the sun.
Sun the star that Earth ( and other planets in our solar system) orbits around that gives Earth heat, light, and energy.
Planet a large round object in space that Does Not give off light and that orbits a star
Star a ball of burning gas in space that gives off light
shadow the dark area created by an object that stops light
orbit the path an object follows around another object
axis an invisible line around which an object rotates or spins
rotation when a planet or moon turns all the way around or spins on its axis at one time
revolution when a planet or moon travels around the body it is orbiting one time
pattern a set of objects or events that are repeated regularly
constellation a cluster of stars in the sky that are grouped together in a particular pattern or shape, and have been given a name
