Body Movement Terms
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Flexion | Bending movement that decreases the angle of the joint |
| Extension | Reverse of flexion; Joint angle is increased |
| Hyperflexion | When a joint is flexed beyond its normal range of motion |
| Hyper-extension | When a joint is extended beyond its normal limits |
| Abduction | Movement away from the midline |
| Adduction | Movement toward the midline |
| Hyperadduction | Adduction past 0 degree point |
| Hyperabduction | Abduction past 180 degree point |
| Inversion | Moving foot so the sole is inward/ Lift medial edge of foot |
| Eversion | Moving foot so the sole is outward/ Lift lateral edge of foot |
| Dorsiflexion | Flexing the foot upwards at the ankle |
| Plantar Flexion | Bending the foot downward at the ankle |
| Elevation | Raising a body part directly upwards, no rotation or changes in the degree of a joint |
| Depression | Movement of a body part in an inferior direction, or moving downward. |
| Protraction | Moving parts forward |
| Retraction | Moving parts backward |
| Supination | Moving hand so the palm is upward |
| Pronation | Moving hand so the palm is downward |
| Radial Flexion | The movement of the wrist towards the "thumb side" |
| Ulnar Flexion | The movement of the wrist towards the "Pinky side" |
