What is the morning ritual for the family unit? The family members tell about their dreams. Then they respond "Thank you for your dream."
What did Lily dream about? getting caught riding her mother's bike
What did Mother dream about? being chastised for a rule infraction that she didn't understand
What did Father dream about? I didn't have a dream
What did Jonas dream about? He was in a bath house trying to get Fiona into a tub to bathe her but she wouldn't do it.
At what age did the telling ritual begin? with the Threes
What was Jonas feeling about his dream? The wanting - he knew she wouldn't and that she shouldn't but he could feel the wanting all through him
What does Mother describe Jonas's wanting as? "A Stirring"
What is the rule about Stirrings? "Stirrings must be reported in order for treatment to take place"
What is the "treatment" for a Stirring? Taking a pill
How long does the treatment for the Stirrings last? all of the adult life
What did Lily get when she became a Seven? What does it symbolize? a front-button jacket. It symbolized independence-the first visible symbol of growing up
What will Lily start as an Eight? her volunteer hours
What will Lily get as a Nine and what will stop? her bicycle and no more hair ribbons
What is the bicycle a symbol/emblem of? moving gradually out into the community and away from the protective family unit
Who attends the December Ceremony? Everyone in the community
Where is the Ceremony held? Auditorium
What did the Ceremony mean for the parents? two days holiday from work
How were the children seated in the auditorium? they sat with their age groups until they went one-by-one to the stage, then they sat with their family unity.
