Question | Answer |

What is matter? | Anything that has mass and takes up space. |
What states of matter are naturally found on Earth? | Solids, Liquids, and Gasses. |
What is heat? | What you feel coming off an object. The motion of molecules. |
What is temperature? | Measure of the motion of the molecules of a substance. |
What is density? | How much space an object of substance takes up. |
How does temperature affect density? | If it's hot, then it's less dense. If it's cold, it compact, or more dense. |
How does heat transfer from matter to matter? | Conduction, Convection, and Radiation. |
What are examples of Conduction? | Hot hands to an ice cube. Heating pan on stove. |
What are examples of Convection? | Hot and cold air. Hot and cold water. |
What are examples of Radiation? | Sun rays and Earth. Campfire heat and hands. |
Name the mechanical layers of the Earth? | Oceanic Crust, Continental Crust, Lithosphere, Aethenosphere, Upper Mantle, Lower Mantle, Outer Core, Inner Core. |
Continental Crust: | Rocks |
Oceanic Crust: | Basalt and Gabbro |
Lithosphere: | Earth's Crust and Upper Mantle |
Upper Mantle: | Rock |
Lower Mantle: | Hot Plastic-Like Rock |
Aethenosphere: | Hot Plastic-Like Rock. Moves Lithosphere |
Outer Core: | Liquid Metal. Creates Earth's Magnetic Field. |
Inner Core: | Heaviest, Densest materials. |
What are minerals? | The building blocks of rocks. |
How do minerals form? | Hot magma, metamorphism, Evaporation, or Hot water. |
What are the properties of Minerals? | Color, Streak, Hardness, Luster, and Cleavage |
How are the properties of minerals different from the characteristics of minerals? | Properties are how to identify minerals from other minerals, while characteristics are used to identify is its a mineral or not. |
Why is it important to be able to identify minerals? | So you use the correct mineral for the correct purpose. |
