Matter Unit Vocab

TermDefinition
volume the amount of space an object takes up
mass how much an object weights, amount of matter
Physical change A type of change that alters the physical properties of a substance but does not change its composition
Chemical change A process involving one or more substances changing into new substances, also called a chemical reaction
Law of Conservation of Matter States that matter is neither created nor destroyed during a chemical reaction but is conserved
Mixture When substances are combined, they maintain their chemical properties and can be easily separated
Solution A uniform mixture that can contain solids, liquids, or gases that cannot be easily separated
Solvent substance in a solution that is the greatest amount; does the dissolving- usually the liquid
Solute substance in a solution that is the least amount; gets dissolved- usually the solid
Solubility The ability of a substance to dissolve
Concentration the relationship between the amount of solute and solvent in a solution
Filtration A technique that uses a porous barrier to separate a solid from a liquid
Chromatography A technique that is used to separate the components of a mixture based on the tendency of each component to travel
Sifting A technique used to separate larger materials from smaller materials. Smaller materials pass through a barrier while larger materials are left behind.
Magnetic Attraction A technique used to separate metal objects from non-metal materials
Floatation A technique used to separate materials of different densities
