Sedimentary Rocks
Key words on sedimentary rocks
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Sedimentary Formation | solidifies into its form from weathering or erosion and then goes through lithification |
| Weathering | physical and chemical break down of a rock |
| Erosion | Transport of broken down pieces by wind, water or ice |
| Lithification | compaction of loose grains that are cemented together using pressure |
| Pore Space | space between grains after lithification - higher compaction = less pore space |
| 3 Groups of Lithification | clastic, bioclastic, and chemical |
| Clastic | -composed of fragments of pre-existing rock that have been transported some distance from their points of origin -smallest grain size |
| Bioclastic | a sedimentary rock that is composed of the remains of small organisms/ organic material |
| Chemical | use of chemical reaction to break down rock; less common |
| Metamorphic Formation | forms from protolith using heat and pressure (changing appearance of rock) |
| Protolith | pre-existing parent rock |
| Contact Metamorphism | high heat applied by contact causing metamorphism |
| Regional Metamorphism | high pressure applied changes rocks deep inside the earth |
| Foliated Formation | occurs from regional; looks like bands and looks as if they can be pulled apart because of compaction |
| Crystallization | formation due to contact metamorphism |
