Diffusion/Osmosis
Diffusion/Osmosis Biology leaving cert
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What is a Semi-permeable Membrane? | A Membrane that only allows certain molecules through it |
| What are some examples of Semi-permeable Membranes? | -Cellophane -Visking Tubing -Dialysis Tubes |
| What do Semi-permeable Membranes usually let through them? | Water (H2O), Carbon Dioxide (CO2) and Oxygen (O2). |
| What molecules do the specialised semi-permeable membranes, Cell Membrane, let through? | Glucose. |
| What is Diffusion? | The movement of a gas or liquid from a high to low concentration. Ie gas diffusion of CO2 from the blood to lungs and of O2 from the lungs to the blood. |
| What is Osmosis? | The movement of water molecules across a semi-permeable Membrane from low to high concentration. |
| Osmosis in Animals | The solution concentration will be balanced, if the external environment overly/under concentrated the cytoplasm will become less/more concentrated. |
| Osmosis in Plants | The Cell wall is fully permeable, water in the vacuole causes the cell wall to be turgid. |
| Osmosis in food preservation | Salty foods take longer to go off because microorganisms die as a result of osmosis. Marmalade and jams dehydrate microorganisms, preventing growth. |
