Key Stage 3 Science

QuestionAnswer
What is an electric current? What instrument is Used to measure current? Is it put in series or parallel In a circuit An electric current is a flow of charge. An ammeter is placed in series in a circuit to measure the current
Name as many circuit components as possible and give their symbols 7J Electricity\Year 7 Circuit symbols
What is an electrical conductor? Give an example. What is an Electrical insulator? Give an example. Electrical conductors are materials that allow charge to flow through them. E.g. metals and graphite. Electrical insulators are materials that do not allow charge to flow through them. E.g. plastic, paper
Explain using a model how the energy from a battery could be transferred to a bulb by connecting them together with wires. This could be the boiler and radiator model. Boiler- burning gas releases the chemical energy of the gas and transfers it into thermal energy of the water, the boiler pumps the water around the pipes in thecircuit. .
3Draw a series circuit with a battery and 2 bulbs in it. What would happen to the brightness of the bulbs if a third is added in series? Explain why. What happens in the circuit if one bulb breaks? Explain why If a third bulb is added all the bulbs would become dimmer. The same energy is now shared between three instead of 2 bulbs. If one bulb breaks then none of the bulbs will light up and there is a gap in the circuit and no current will flow.
Draw a parallel circuit with a battery and 2 bulbs in it.What would happen to the brightness of the bulbs if a third is added in parallel? Explain why. What happens in the circuit if one bulb breaks? Explain why. If a third bulb is added in parallel then all the bulb will be the same brightness as if there were only 2 bulbs. This is because each charge that flows will deliver its energy to only one bulb.
3What 2 factors affect size of a current depend up on in a circuit? The current will increase if a higher voltage battery/cell is used. The current will decrease if there are more components placed in a series circuit, that is a greater resistance.
3What is voltage? How do we measure it? Voltage is a measure of how much energy is transferred to or from charges as they are pushed through batteries or through components in a circuit.
Why is electricity a hazard? How can you reduce the risk when using electrical appliances? A hazard is something that could cause you hard e.g. electric shock. We reduce the risk by insulating wire with plastic, having fuses in plugs
Draw a plug, label and name the wires, what colours are the wires. Label where the fuse should go? What is a fuse and why are there fuses in plugs? They are pieces of metal that melt when too much currrent passes through them. They protect us from electric shock and stop electric devices from being damaged from too high a current.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
