Interactions in living systems (EPISD 8th grade)

QuestionAnswer
Autotrophs Groups of organisms that use sunlight. Also called producers
Chemotrophs Get their energy from non-living substances like salt (Example: Bacteria)
Heterotrophs Organisms that do not make their own food
Producer Get energy from sun. Also called Autotrophs. (Examples: Plants and algae)
Primary consumer Eats plants
Secondary consumer Eats primary consumers
Decomposers Bacteria and fungi that break down dead organisms
Food web Something like a very complex food chain
Symbiosis A close and permanent relationship between organisms of different species
Commensalism A symbiotic relationship in which one organism benefits and the other is not affected
Mutualism A symbiotic relationship in which both organisms benefit from each other
Parasitism A symbiotic relationship in which one organism benefits and the other is harmed
Primary Succession Occurs in an area where there are no existing communities and for some reason(s) a new community of organisms moves into the area
Secondary succession Occurs in an area after an existing community is partially damaged
Adaptation Adjusting to change
