Forensic Entomology

Forensic entomology The application of the scientific study of insects to criminal and civil investigations
ADH (Accumulated Degree Hours) A given amount of thermal energy needed to develop from one stage of insect life style to the next
Ambient temperature The temperature of surrounding air
Carrion Dead flesh that insects are attracted to
Flaccidity Softness/limpness
Instar A stage of an insect or other arthropod between molts
Larvae The newly hatched, earliest stages of insects and other animals that undergo metamorphosis, differing markedly in form and appearance from the adult
Lividity The process by which blood settles to the lowest parts of a cadaver, causing a deep purple discoloration of the skin that can resemble bruises
Oviposition To deposit or lay eggs
Pallor Unusual or extreme paleness
PMI (Post Mortem Interval) Time between the time of death, and the beginning of the post-mortem, or coroner's investigation
Rigor mortis The stiffening of the body after death, usually from four to twelve hours after death
Carrion flies Flies that feed exclusively on the dead flesh of carrions and lay eggs on the carcass
Adult insects Hard-bodied, segmented insects with six legs, one or two pairs of wings, and three distinct body parts: head, thorax, and abdomen
Larval insects Softer-bodied, legless, segmented worm-like creatures that span a variety of habitats
