| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Superior | higher up on body, closer to the head |
| Inferior | lower on body, further from the head |
| Lateral | towards the sides of the body |
| Medial | towards the center of the body |
| Ipsillateral | on the same side of the body |
| Contralateral | on different sides of the body |
| Proximal | towards the top of a limb, closer to trunk |
| Distal | towards the bottom of a limb (fingers and toes) |
| Posterior/Dorsal | towards the back of the body |
| Anterior/Ventral | towards the front of the body |
| Deep | away from the body's surface, more internal |
| Superficial | towards the surface/skin |
| Palmar | palm of hand |
| Dorsal (arm)/ Dorsal (leg) | backside of arm or leg |
| Plantar | bottom of feet |
| Carpal | wrist |
| Antecubital | pit of elbow |
| Tarsal | ankle |
| Popliteal | pit of knee |
| Left & Right Division | midsagittal plane |
| Front & Back | frontal/cronal |
| Upper & Lower | transverse |
| Diagonal Plane | oblique |
| Parasagittal Plane | parallel to the midsagittal plane |
| Serous membranes | balloon like protectors for organs |
| Serous fluid | lubricants the organs and allows them to glide without friction |
| Epigastric | upper stomach |
| Axial | refers to head, neck, and trunk |
| Appendicular | refers to limbs |
| Peritoneal | abdominal cavity |
| Perineal | genital region |
| Peronial | calfish fibula |
| Anatomy | study of structure of body parts |
| Physiology | study of the function of body parts |
