| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Buffer | Solution that prevents sharp, sudden changes in pH |
| Acid | Substance with pH below 7 that releases hydrogen ions (H+) in solution |
| Base | Substance with pH above 7 that produces hydroxide ions (OH-) or accepts hydrogen ions (H+) in solution |
| pH scale | Measurement standard with values from 0-14 used to measure hydrogen ion (H+) concentration |
| Atom | Basic unit of matter |
| Electron | Negatively charged particle that moves around the nucleus of an atom |
| Nucleus | Center of an atom |
| Molecule | Group of 2 or more atoms held together by chemical bonds |
| Ion | Atom or group of atoms that carries a positive or negative charge |
| Element | Pure substance that consists of one type of atom |
| Isotopes | Atoms of the same element that differ in their number of neutrons |
| Covalent bond | Strong chemical bond between atoms in which the electrons are shared |
| Ionic bond | Bond involving the transfer of electrons |
| Hydrogen bond | Weak attraction between a hydrogen atom with a partial positive charge and an electronegative atom in another molecule |
| Solvent | Liquid in which a solute dissolves |
| Solute | Substance that is dissolved |
| Solution | Liquid mixture in which all of the components are dissolved |
| Cohesion | Attraction between molecules of the same substance, such as two water molecules |
| Adhesion | Attraction between molecules of two different substances |
| Compound | Substance formed by the chemical combination of two or more different types of atoms in definite proportions |
