Regional Terms

Regional Terms Human Anatomy & Physiology

TermRegion
Abdominal Describes anything that resides between chest and pelvic region. (e.g. abdominal muscles, stomach, intestines)
Antecubital Describes the elbow region.
Axillary Describes the anatomical region of the underarm (below joint where arm connects to shoulder).
Brachial Describes anything in the arm.
Buccal Describes anything in the cheek.
Calcaneal Describes the area below the ankle at the back of the foot.
Carpal Describes the bones that connect to the distal ends of radius and ulna and are the base of the fingers(metacarpal).
Cephalic Relating to the head. Synonymous with cranial.
Cervical The section of the spine in the neck. (C1-C7)
Coxal The ball joint of the hip.
Digital Describes fingers or toes (also called digits).
Femoral Describes femur region (thigh).
Gluteal Describes buttock region.
Inguinal Describes the region near genitals. Usually called the groin.
Lumbar Lower section of back (L1-L5). Largest vertebrae in the spine.
Nasal The cavities in your nose where air flows.
Occipital Describes the region of the section of the skull located in the back toward the base.
Olecranal Describes the region of the large protrusion of the proximal joint of the ulna and radius that gives the elbow it's "point."
Oral Describes the region of the mouth or oral cavity.
Orbital Describes the region of the cavity in the skull that holds the eyeballs (eye-socket).
Patellar Describes the region of kneecap or patella.
Pelvic Describes the region of the pelvis.
Popliteal Describes the region behind the knee.
Sacral Describes the area at the base of the spine where it connects the to pelvis.
Scapular Describes the region where the scapula resides (scapula is the large bone that connects the clavicle to the humorous).
Sternal Describes the region of the sternum (the bone that connects to the ribs at the middle of the chest).
Tarsal Describes region of the ankle bones.
Thoracic Describes the region of the thorax or thoracic cavity.
Umbilical Describes the region around the belly-button.
Vertebral Describes region near the spine or vertebrae.
Inferior Relatively lower.
Superior Relatively higher.
Ventral Relatively towards the front of trunk.
Dorsal Relatively towards the back of trunk.
Anterior Relatively more forward.
Posterior Relatively more backwards.
Medial Relatively towards the middle.
Lateral Relatively away from the middle.
Superficial Relatively closer to surface.
Deep Relatively more inward.
Distal Relatively away from base.
Proximal Relatively close to base.
