| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| average | add up all the values in the data set and divide by the number of values in the list |
| confounding variable | a third variable that unintentionally influences the outcome of the experiment (example: your plants do not get equal amounts of sunlight) |
| control | a standard of comparison |
| dependent variable | the variable that is measured by the scientist |
| hypothesis | A possible explanation about an observation that can be tested by scientific investigations and includes both independent and dependent variables (example: The cotton t-shirt will dry the fastest compared to the wool, polyester, and denim shirts.) |
| independent variable | the variable that is changed by the scientist |
| observation | Using one or more of your five senses to gather information Scientific observations are specific (example: each floor tile is white, a square, and 12 inches by 12 inches) |
| phenomenon | an observable event (example: an earthquake cause the floor to shake and objects to fall) |
| units | any standard used for making comparisons in measurements (examples: centimeters, inches, grams, etc.) |
