401 - Tissues
Honors
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| tissue - | A group of similar cells that perform the same function. |
| organ - | group of tissues that work together to perform closely related functions |
| organ system - | group of organs that work together to perform a specific function |
| the four tissue types - | epithelial, connective, muscle, nervous |
| epithelial tissue - | covers and lines ex: the outer layers of the skin are epithelial tissue; the lining of the digestive system is epithelial tissue |
| connective tissue - | provides support for your body and connects all its parts A key characteristic is an extensive extracellular matrix |
| extracellular matrix - | the substances in between cells the fluid portion of blood, in which the blood cells are suspended, is an extracellular matrix |
| Examples of connective tissue - | bone, cartilage, tendons, ligaments, adipose tissue, and blood |
| muscle tissue - | A body tissue that contracts or shortens, making body parts move |
| nervous tissue - | A body tissue that carries electrical messages back and forth between the brain and every other part of the body |
| simple epithelial tissue - | single layer of cells |
| stratified epithelial tissue - | multiple layers of cells |
| squamous - | flat |
| cuboidal - | cube shaped |
| columnar - | column shaped |
| function of simple squamous epithelium - | permits diffusion lines capillaries and alveoli |
| function of stratified squamous epithelium - | protects underlying tissues in areas subjected to abrasion does not permit diffusion ex: the outer layer of the skin, the lining of the esophagus |
| function of simple cuboidal and columnar epithelium - | secretes and absorbs ex: the lining of the intestines |
| interstitial fluid - | fluid between cells |
| skeletal muscle - | striated and voluntary connected to bones |
| smooth muscle - | not striated involuntary not connected to bones found in walls of digestive system and arteries ex: peristalsis |
| cardiac muscle - | Involuntary muscle tissue found only in the heart. |
| tendon - | Connects muscle to bone |
| ligament - | Connects bone to bone ex: ACL |
| Neuron - | nervous system cells capable of sending electrical messages |
| dendrites - | Branchlike parts of a neuron that are specialized to receive information. |
| axon - | the "tail" of a neuron that carries nerve impulses away from the cell body |
