208 Carbon Cycle

Carbon - an element found in all living things in the atmosphere, it is in the form of CO2
Carbon cycle - the movement of carbon from the nonliving environment into living things and back
carbon reservoir - A place where carbon is stored example: the atmosphere
carbon sink - absorbs carbon from the atmosphere example: the ocean
What releases CO2 into the atmosphere? - cellular respiration, decomposition, and combustion of fossil fuels
What removes CO2 from the atmosphere? - photosynthesis
fossil fuels - coal, oil, natural gas, and other fuels they are the organic remains of ancient plants and animals
cellular respiration - the process by which cells use oxygen to produce energy from food produces CO2 as a waste product
combustion - the process of burning something releases CO2
photosynthesis - use energy from the sun to convert water and carbon dioxide into sugars removes CO2 from the atmosphere
greenhouse gases - gases that trap heat in the atmosphere example: CO2
global warming - A gradual increase in average global temperature caused in part by humans burning fossil fuels
Decomposition - The break down of organic matter by decomposers Releases CO2
