TermDefinition
native species - Species that normally live and thrive in a particular ecosystem
introduced species - species moved by humans to new geographic areas, either intentionally or accidentally some become invasive species
invasive species - species that enter new ecosystems and harm native species and their habitats They use up all the resources for themselves
How do species become invasive? - Lack of predators in the new ecosystem Ability to reproduce more rapidly than native species Ability to live in many types of environments
Extinction - when a species no longer exists
endangered species - A species in danger of becoming extinct in the near future
Endangered Species Act - A law intended to identify and protect endangered species
Keystone species - a species that plays a very important role in its ecosystem If removed, the ecosystem would be greatly harmed
Niche - An organism's particular role in an ecosystem
outcompete - displace another species
displace - to take the place of
fertility - The production of offspring
high fertility - Producing lots of offspring
low fertility - Producing few offspring
invade - to move into a place and cause harm Related word: invasion
Examples of invasive species - Kudzu Emerald ash borer Cane toads
Examples of endangered species - Rhinoceroses Pandas Elephants
Example of keystone species - sea otters wolves
threatened species - A species that could become endangered in the near future
scarce - limited in short supply Related: scarcity
checked - Limited
unchecked - not limited not restrained or controlled
specialized niche - Rely on a narrow range of food sources live in a narrow range of habitats
