Characteristics of Living Things

Photosynthesis The process by which plants algae, and some bacteria use sunlight, carbon dioxide and water to make food
Producer An organism that can make its own food by using energy from its surroundings
Asexual Reproduction Reproductive involving only one parent to produce offspring that is genetically identical to the parent
Decomposer An organism that gets energy by breaking down the remains of a dead organism or animal wastes and consuming or absorbing the nutrients
Consumer An organism that eats other organisms or organic matter
Eukaryotes An organism made up of cells that contain a nucieus
Heredity The passing on of genetic traits from parent to offspring
Metabolism The sum of all processes that occur in an organism
Response An action or change in behavior that occurs as a result of a stimulus
Sexual Reproduction Reproduction involving two parents to produce offspring that share traits from both parents
Prokaryotes An organism that consists of a single cell that does not have a nucleus
Cell The smallest unit that can perform all life processes, covered by a membrane and contain DNA
Stimulus Anything that can cause a reaction or change in an organism or any part of an organism
Homeostasis The maintenance of a constant internal state in a changing environment
