Natural Resources an

Science Test

QuestionAnswer
Natural Resources Any natural material used by humans like water, petroleum, minerals, and forests.
Renewable A natural resource that can be replaced at the same rate that it was used.
Nonrenewable A natural resource that forms at a rate much slower that it is used
Reduce Reuse Recycling Reduce: to use less bad stuff Reuse: to use that bad stuff again and not put it in the trash Recycling: using something as another thing
Fossil Fuels a nonrenewable energy resource formed from the remains of organisms that lived a long time ago. Like Oil, Coal , and Natural Gas
Petroleum A liquid mixture of complex hydrocarbon compounds. It's used widely as a fuel resource.
Natural Gas A mixture of gaseous hydrocarbons located under the surface of the earth. Often near petroleum deposits. It's used as fuel.
Coal A fossil fuel that forms underground from partially decomposed plant material.
Petroleum and Natral Gas formation 1. Sediments lie on the ocean floor 2. Bodies are compacted with sediments which then becomes rock 3. Over millions of year they become Pet. and NG 4. After all the pressure they move in permeable rocks
How does pet. and Ng get out 1. Drill wells into the reservoir rocks 2. After fuels are succesfuly tapped, pumps are used to remove the fuels from the rock
Problems with fossil fuels Coal Mining: Very dangerous job. It can also destroy the soil which the plants need Petroleum Problems: The oil is spilled into the water Smog:Burning petroleum van produce smog
Chemical Energy The energy released when a chemical compound reacts to produce new compound.
Solar Energy The energy received by earth from the sun in the form of radiation
Wind Power The use of the wind to drive an electric generator.
Hydroelectric Energy electrical energy produced by falling water.
Biomass Organic matter that can be a source of energy by burning.
Gasohol A mixture of gasoline and alcohol that is used as a fuel.
Geothermal Energy the energy produced by heat within the earth.
How is GE formed 1. Steam rises through a well 2. The steam drives turbines which in turn drives elctric generators 3.The generator produces electrical energy 4. The steam escapes the power plant from vents 5. Excess water is put back into the hot rock
