Scientific Method Vocab.

| science | The systematic study of our natural world through observation and experimentation |
| Scientific method | A process used to find answers to questions about our world. - also known as experimental design, |
| Scientific question | A specific, testable question about our natural world. |
| Hypothesis | An educated guess based on observation - created before the experiment is completed and part of the planning process |
| Observation | Those things that you can tell based on your 5 senses. |
| Quantitative observation | the information you find that is a number or amount, like height, temperature or time |
| Qualitative observation | the information you find that is a word or category, like color or direction |
| Data | information gathered during an experiment (your results) |
| Classifying | to group things based on something that they have in common |
| Variable | something that changes |
| Independent variable | the aspect that you, the scientist, purposely changes to gather data |
| Dependent variable | the aspect of the experiment that changes because of what you changed - the data you are looking to collect |
| constant | variables in an experiment that don’t change |
| procedure | the step by step directions of the experiment |
