Terrestrial Biomes

| biome | A group of ecosystems with similar climates and organisms |
| permafrost | Ground that is permanently frozen |
| nocturnal | active at night |
| deciduous forest | A biome with four seasons, plants shed leaves in the fall and grow new ones in the spring |
| migration | movement of organisms from one place to another |
| hibernation | A period of inactivity that some animals experience in winter that allows them to survive on stored body fat |
| emergent layer | The tallest layer of the rain forest that receives the most sunlight |
| canopy layer | layer where trees grow close together, blocks most of sunlight and keeps moisture from evaporating |
| understory layer | located under the canopy layer and consists of leafy plants with large leaves to gather sunlight |
| forest floor layer | area in the tropical rainforest that is ground level |
| camouflage | the act of concealing the identity of something by modifying its appearance |
| drip tips | An adaptation of a leaf in the rainforest - it is designed to funnel the water away from the plant |
| buttress roots | large, above ground roots that provide stability in tropical trees |
| Epiphytes | plants that grow on other plants |
| climate | overall weather in an area over a long period of time |
| weather | The condition of Earth's atmosphere at a particular time and place |
| climatograph | Climatic diagram in which average precipitation and average temperature can be viewed together |
| estivation | A period of inactivity and lowered body temperature that some animals undergo in summer as a protection against hot weather and lack of food |
| coniferous | term used to refer to trees that produce seed-bearing cones and have thin leaves shaped like needles |
| deciduous | Trees and shrubs that shed their leaves at the end of the growing season |
| terrestrial | relating to the land |
| diversity | variety, many different kinds of something |
| temperate | mild, moderate |
