Apic Text ch 11 Surveillance

QuestionAnswer
What are the 3 elements of an effective surveillance program? 1. Select the Surveillance Methodology 2. Assess and Define the Population(s) to be Studied 3. Choose the Events to Monitor
What should Surveillance programs measure? outcomes of healthcare processes of healthcare and selected events of importance to the organization.
retrospective data collection closed-record review after discharge
What are the advantages of concurrent surveillance? data collectors may interview personnel if chart does not include the information needed; immediate prevention and control measures, clusters and outbreaks detected quickly; and ips available to correct potential problems & provide education.
The disadvantages of concurrent surveillance are: the time involved in locating records on a medical care unit (if paper records are being used) and incomplete medical records.
The major advantage of retrospective review is that the medical record is more complete.
The disadvantage of retrospective surveillance is important findings, such as the identification of an outbreak, may be delayed and missing information may not be obtainable after discharge.
Automated surveillance defined as the process of obtaining useful information from infection prevention data "through the systematic application of medical informatics and computer science technologies."
What are the disadvantages of manual methods for obtaining and evaluating the data needed to identify HAIs time consuming, error prone, and labor intensive
What is a TAP report The Targeted Assessment for Prevention (TAP) Strategy is a framework for quality improvement developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to use data for action to prevent healthcare-associated infections (HAIs).
Critical elements needed to be successful in reducing infection rates include the following: Voluntary participation & confidentiality Standard definitions and protocols Defined populations at risk Site-specific, risk-adjusted infection rates Adequate # of trained IPs Dissemination of data link between monitored rates & prevention efforts
is routine ENVIRONMENTAL SAMPLING recommended No. the CDC states Routine or random, undirected microbiological culturing of air, water, and environmental surfaces in healthcare facilities is not recommended
when is environmental sampling & Culturing is indicated Culturing is indicated, however, for selected quality assurance purposes, such as biological monitoring of sterilizers using bacterial spores and cultures of water and dialysate in hemodialysis units
