TermDefinition
Analyze To examine carefully and in detail to identify causes, key factors, or results.
Classify to organize into groups based on similarities.
Compare To examine two or more objects and note similarities.
Conclusion The outcome of an experiment to tell if your hypothesis is correct or in correct.
Contrast To compare by showing unlikeness or differences.
Control Variable The variables that are not changes in an experiment.
Data Facts, figures, and other evidence gathered through observation.
Estimate An approximate judgment or evaluation.
Evaluate To determine the significance or worth of the results of an experiment.
Graph A diagram that shows the relationship of variables
Hypothesis A possible explanation for a set of observations or answer to a scientific question. It must be testable.
Infer/inference A predication based on observations and prior knowledge.
Interpret To give or provide the meaning of.
Manipulated/Independent Variable The one factor that a scientist changes during an experiment.
Mass The amount of matter in an object.
Metric System A decimal system of weights and measures
Objective What a scientist tries to obtain the purpose or goal.
Observing The process of using one or more of your senses to gather information.
Predicting To explain in advance what you think is going to happen.
Purpose An intended or desired result.
Qualitative Pertaining to the quality or qualities. Characteristics not expresses in numbers.
Quantitative Pertaining to the measurement of quantity, a number or amount
Responding/Dependant Variable The factor that changes as a result of changes to the manipulated variable.
Summarize To put an answer into brief and comprehensible format.
Variable A factor that can change in an experiment.
Volume The amount of space an object takes up.
X-axis The horizontal axis (manipulated variable) of a graph
Y-axis The vertical axis (responding variable) of a graph.
