Lesson 7: Roots

QuestionAnswer
What are the three main jobs of roots? To absorb nutrients and water from the soil, to hold the plant in place like an anchor, and to prevent erosion.
Explain why root hairs are important. Root hairs do most of the work of absorbing water and nutrients for the plant; without them the plant would die.
Where do roots add to their length? Roots grow longer from the tip, adding cells to the end of each root.
What is the root cap? The strongest part of the tip of the root. It's made up of a group of tough cells whose job is to push through dirt in search of moisture and nutrients.
What are the roots always looking for? Water and nutrients
What is geotropism? A root's special sense that tells it to turn and grow down into the Earth
What is another name for geotropism? Gravitropism, meaning turning in the direction of gravity
Tell me about rooting a plant. You take a healthy stem, branch, or even leaf from a plant and put it in soil or water to grow and new plant of the same kind. It is considered a clone, or copy, of the original plant because it has the same DNA.
Three chemical elements plants need as very important nutrients. What are they? Nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium
If a plant isn't very green, then they might not have enough of this chemical. Nitrogen
What does phosphorus provide a plant? The energy they need to grow
Why do plants need potassium? For photosynthesis
What are the two main kinds of root systems? Taproot systems and fibrous root systems
What grows out of bulbs? Roots
What is stored in a bulb? It stores special leaves and a short stem
What is each layer of a bulb? A special kind of leaf
Name some examples of bulbs Onions and garlic
Name the types of geophytes. Bulb, rhizomes, corms, and tubers
What is a common tuber we often eat? Potatoes
What is rooting a plant? It is to take a healthy stem or branch from a plant and put it in soil or water
What are plants grown by rooting called? Clones
