Lesson 4: Pollination

QuestionAnswer
What are the things that attract insects to flowers? Smell, color, patterns (nectar guides)
What color is the hummingbird most attracted to? Red
Name some mammals that pollinate plants. Bats, lemurs, and some rodents
Explain wind pollination. Pollen is blown off the tree and glides in the wind until it lands on another tree of the same kind nearby.
Explain self-pollination. Pollen from a flower's stamen goes to the carpel on the same flower.
Can you also explain why a flower petal dries up and falls off after it has been pollinated? Because it has finished its work of attracting pollinators and can then spend its energy manufacturing seeds. Also, other flowers will get an equal chance to be pollinated which means plenty of seeds will be produced.
What do nocturnal plants and animals do? They sleep during the day and come out at night.
What are the colors of the rainbow? red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet
What is the visible spectrum? The set of colors in the rainbow, which contains all the colors we can see.
What are the two kinds of light from the sun that we cannot see? Infrared light and ultraviolet light
What are nectar guides? Flowers have special patterns on their petals that tell the bees and butterflies exactly where their nectar is stored. Thes special designs point the insect toward the center of the flower.
