Lesson 2: Seeds

What is a seed? A baby plant in a protective covering.
What does dormant mean? Asleep, from the Latin word dormire which means to sleep
What does a seed need to wake up and begin growing? Warmth, water, and air
What is a baby plant in a seed called? An embryo
What is the seed's testa? The seed's coat
What does the testa do? Protects the embryo
What is the hilum on a seed? The place where the seed was attached to its mother
Describe germination. Students should refer to the illustration on p. 38 to describe the process of germination.
What is the top part of the embryo called? The epoicotyl
What are the feather-like leaves on the embryo called? The plumule
What is the embryo's root called The readicle
What is the nutrition within the seed called before it gets absorbed by the cotyledons? The endosperm
Explain how the testa comes off for germination. When the seed gets wet, water gets inside the testa making it soft and soggy and causing it to fall off.
What is a procucer? A living thing that makes, or produces, its own food
What is a consumer? A living thing that eats, or consumes, other living things for food
Are plants producers or consumers? Producers
Are people producers or consumers? Consumers
