Atmosphere the layers of gases surrounding the planet
Biosphere all living things on Earth
Carbon cycle The natural process by which carbon atoms are exchanged and recycled between the atmosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere, and geosphere.
Fossil fuels fuels that contain the carbon of plants and animals that died and were preserved millions of years ago
Fossils the preserved remains of once-living organisms
Hydrosphere all the liquid water on the Earth’s surface
Lithosphere the land masses on Earth
Combustion A chemical reaction involving the combination of oxygen with a fuel source, resulting in the release of heat, light, and carbon dioxide (CO2)
Photosynthesis The process by which green plants and some other organisms use sunlight, carbon dioxide, and water to produce glucose and oxygen.
Respiration The metabolic process in living organisms that breaks down organic matter, such as glucose, to release energy.
Carbon Sink Any reservoir or process that absorbs more carbon dioxide from the atmosphere than it releases, thereby reducing the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere.
Carbon Source Any reservoir or process that releases more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere than it absorbs, thereby increasing the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere.
Fossil Fuel Carbon-rich energy sources formed from the remains of plants and animals that lived millions of years ago.
Carbon Reservoir A natural or artificial storage location where carbon is stored for long periods of time.
