| Chemical Category | Organic & inorganic substances |
| Microbiological Category | Pathogens (virus, bacteria, protozoa. helminths) |
| Radiological Category | Radiological substances (from using nuclear power, etc.) |
| Turbidity | Due to presence of suspended materials |
| Color | Due to dissolved organic material |
| Taste & Odor | Due to organic compounds, inorganic salts or dissolved gases |
| Temperature | Desirable to be cool & does not fluctuate |
| Turbidity | Measure of optical properties of a water sample that cause light to be scattered and absorbed |
| Total Suspended Solids | >1 micron, removed by filtration |
| Total Dissolved Solids | Inorganic and small amounts of organic matter, removed by distillation/absorption |
| pH | Measure of acidity/alkalinity of water |
