Topic 7: Distribution of Natural Resources

| nonrenewable resource | a natural resource that is not replaced in a useful time frame |
| fossil fuels | energy-rich substance formed from the remains of organisms |
| nuclear fission | the splitting of an atom's nucleus into two nuclei, which releases a great deal of energy |
| renewable resource | a resource that is either always available or is naturally replaced in a relatively short time |
| solar energy | energy from the sun is collected either passively or actively to produce power |
| hydroelectric resource | natural flow of a river is controlled through a dam to pass through turbines to generate power |
| wind energy | turbines are used to harness wind |
| geothermal energy | heat from under the Earth's surface is used to generate electricity |
| bioenergy resource | plant-based materials are burned to produce light and heat |
| mineral | solid substance that is non-living and made from a particular combination of elements |
| ore | mineral deposit large enough and valuable enough for it to be extracted from the ground |
| crystallize | to form a crystal structure |
| magma | molten and semi-molten rock mixture found beneath Earth's surface |
| lava | molten and semi-molten rock mixture found above the Earth's surface |
| surface water | freshwater found on top of Earth's land surface |
| groundwater | forms when gravity causes water from precipitation and runoff to seep into the ground and fill empty spaces between rocks |
| desalination | a process that removes salt from sea water to make fresh water |
