cells

cell & membrane structure

QuestionAnswer
Cell theory a scientific theory that all living things are made up of cells, all the functions occur within cells and all cells come from already existing cells (materials produced by cells)
Cell 6 main parts Cell/plasma membrane: Cytoplasm: Cytosol: Cytoskeleton: Inclusions: Organelle:
Cytoplasm made up of organelles and cytosol, contents of cell
Cytosol liquid part of cytoplasm of a cell
Cell/plasma membrane external boundary of the cell which determines which substances get into & out of the cell
Cytoskeleton internal scaffolding
Inclusions chemical substances inside a cell in the form of granules or droplets.eg haemoglobin in red blood cells
Organelle - edit structure within cytoplasm of a cell with specific functions
Extracellular fluid outside the cell eg tissue fluid, blood plasma
Intracellular fluid found inside the cell
Cell requires Water Proteins (amino acids) Salts (ions) Fats (lipids) Sugar (glucose) → carbohydrates Oxygen Expel co2 and other waste Expel cell products Vitamins and minerals
fluid mosaic model Phospholipids: lipid molecule containing phosphate group Arranged in a bilaye so the water proof head is outside and tail is inside Protein:4 types - channel, carrier, receptor and recognition Cholesterol: stabilize structure Carbs
permeable/ semi-permeable permits the passage of certain substances (usually small) but restricts the passage of others (usually large)
facilitated transport the process wheye by proteins in the cell membrane allow molecules to be transported across the membrane
Channel proteins a protein that allows ions, water & small molecules to pass through the cell membrane
Carrier proteins: proteins that carries substances from one side of the cell to the other Active Special carrier proteins - will only bind to molecules that fit. Can become saturated . Regulated by hormones. Glucose, ions, amino acids
Vesicular transport transport of materials into and out of a cell in membrane bound sacs called vesicles
Endocytosis cell takes in materials by enfolding& enclosing Pinocytosis- liquids Phagocytosis - solids
Exocytosis contents of vesicles are pushed out Excretion of water & secretions Mucus & digestive juices

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
