Year 9 Science NZ Separating Mixtures

solution Forms when a solute dissolves in a solvent.
concentrated A solution that contains a large amount of solute.
solute A substance which dissolves in a solvent.
filtration The process of passing a mixture through a filter to remove solid particles.
soluble A substance that is able to dissolve.
filtrate The liquid which has passed through a filter.
solvent The liquid in which a solute dissolves.
saturated A solution which can’t have any more solute dissolved in it.
dilute A solution that contains a small amount of solute.
evaporation When a liquid becomes a gas. This leaves behind any solutes.
insoluble A substance that is not able to be dissolved.
distillation The process of evaporating and then condensing a liquid.
residue The solid substance left behind on the filter.
pigment A coloured substance.
chromatography The process of separating the different pigments in a mixture.
