Microbiology

termdefinition
turbidity cloudiness in tube.
colony isolated microorganism populations.
quantitative dilution accurately measuring the amount of liquid used to make a reduction in concentration.
aseptic technique special precautions to maintain the purity of culture being transferred.
stock culture a reserve culture used to store an isolated organism in pure conditions to use in a laboratory.
incubated placed in favorable growing conditions.
sediment/button cell growth that has collected at the bottom of the test tube
isolated colony visible mass of growth. not touching other bacteria,
streak plate a piece of unglazed porcelain that you can test growth of bacterial on
pour plate diluted sample mixed with agar, poured into empty petri dishes. colonies form in and on plate.
serial dilution the process of diluting a sample several times
quantitative measuring by quantity of bacteria colonies
inoculate transfer of media from stock culture to sterilized media.
pure culture a culture containing a single kind of microorganism. coming from the same parent cell.
bacterial growth an increase in the number of bacteria in a colony.
pellicle growth of film across the surface
incubator provides optimal environment for bacterial growth
turbidity (BROTH) cloudiness
flocculent (BROTH) loosely aggregated particles or soft flakes
ring formation (BROTH) growth around the class broth line
pellicle formation (BROTH) growth of a thin film across the surface
loop dilution using the inoculating loop to create the reductions in concentration
solidifying agar 35C
arborescent (AGAR) thicker, branched
rhizoid (AGAR) thinner, branched
