TermDefinition
Seasons are caused by Earth’s tilt on its axis as it revolves around the Sun
Comet a frozen mass of different types of ice and dust that orbit the Sun
Earth the third planet from the Sun that has life as we know it
Solar System made up of the Sun and it’s eight planets along with many moons, asteroids, and comets. **Pluto is a dwarf planet.
High tide is when a full or new moon and the sun exert gravity on the Earth’s oceans.
Asteroid a rocky mass that revolves around the Sun
Axis an imaginary center line that all objects in our solar system rotate on.
Day One spin/ rotation of Earth on its axis- 24 hours
Leap year every 4 years, February has an extra day, Feb. 29th to account for the ¼ of a day for 4 years it takes Earth to revolve around the Sun
Revolution one full orbit around the Sun
Elliptical the planets revolve around the Sun in an oval orbit
Inner planets The first four planets closest to the Sun with rocky surfaces; before the asteroid belt (Milky Way).
Rotation one whole spin of an object on its imaginary center
Month the time it takes the moon to revolve around Earth- 27-30 days
Moon phases the 8 shapes of the lit side of the Moon we can see from Earth.
Space probes spacecraft that gather data without a manned crew.
Year Earth’s revolution around the Sun- 365 ¼ days
Outer planets The planets farthest away from the Sun also known as gaseous giants; on the far side of the asteroid belt (Milky Way)
Asteroid belt an area between Mars and Jupiter that has many rocky masses (asteroids).
