Scientific Method

TermDefinition
science using evidence to understand the world around us.
scientific method A step-by-step process that scientists use to study and learn about the world around them.
observations Use your senses when paying close attention to something in order to learn more about it.
hypothesis A smart guess or an idea that you will test with an experiment. A PREDICTION
experiment A test in which you collect evidence to answer a question.
evidence Factual information that supports an idea or method. PROOF
scientific method steps 1.) Question 2.) Hypothesis 3.) Experiment. 4.) Data 5.) Conclusion The order of these steps can be repeated or changed up as needed. Observations are done through out.
investigation to look into carefully and closely so as to learn the facts; examine
claim An answer to a scientific question.
analyze to study something closely and carefully
theory a carefully thought-out explanation for observations of the natural world that has been constructed using the scientific method, and which brings together many facts and hypotheses.
fair test When you conduct an experiment and only change one thing at a time.
data Information collected and recorded from an experiment.
independent variable the one thing that is changed (the cause) ex. putting on sunscreen at the beach
dependent variable the one thing that changes because of the independent variable (the effect) ex. no sunscreen = I will get a sunburn.
controlled variable the thing that we keep the same ex. the amount of time at the beach
fair test a test which controls all but one variable when attempting to answer a scientific question.
theory when the evidence from repeated tests proves that a hypothesis is correct.
