General Science

Variable, data, science and engineering practices

QuestionAnswer
Hypothesis an educated guess, or a guess you make based on information you already know.
Qualitative data Information describing color, odor, shape, or some other physical characteristic.
Quantitative data numerical data
Independent variable This variable is NOT influenced by any other factors in the experiment, but it CAUSES change in other variables
Dependent variable The variable influenced; it is the affect of other variables.
Control variable A variable that is kept constant during a controlled experiment.
Ask Questions and Define Problems I define constraints and specifications for a solution.
Develop and Use Models I use models to explain and predict behaviors of systems, or test a design
Plan and Carry Out Investigations I decide what data will be collected and how much, and what tools are needed
Analyze and Interpret Data I use tables, graphs, spreadsheets, etc. to display and analyze data
Use Math and Computational Thinking I can organize data in charts and describe, measure, compare, and estimate quantities to answer scientific questions.
Constructing Explanations and Designing Solutions I can use evidence from an investigation to create an explanation.
Engage in Evidence-Based Arguments I can create an argument using evidence from my investigations.
Obtain, Evaluate and Communicate Information I can read texts to obtain scientific information; evaluate information gathered from other sources; and communicate scientific information through speaking and writing.
