Year 9 Science NZ Matter
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Expansion | When a substance takes up more space, because its particles have moved further apart. This happens when a substance is heated. |
| Evaporating | Changing from a liquid into a gas. |
| Matter | A substance that occupies space and has mass. |
| Gas | A type of matter in which the particles are far apart. It will fill (or escape) its container. |
| Melting | Changing from a solid into a liquid. |
| Sublimation | Changing directly from a solid into a gas. |
| Condensing | Changing from a gas into a liquid. |
| Solid | A type of matter in which the particles are packed tightly together. It cannot be poured and does not take on the shape of its container. |
| Solidifying | Changing from a liquid into a solid. |
| Liquid | A type of matter in which the particles can slide past each other. It can be poured and will take the shape of the bottom of its container. |
| Particles | The very small parts which make up a substance. |
| Contraction | When a substance takes up less space, because its particles have moved closer together. This happens when a substance is cooled. |
| Diffusion | When particles in a liquid or gas move from where they have a high concentration to where they have a low concentration. |
| Density | How tightly packed together the particles are in a substance. |
