What is an air mass? A huge body of air that has similar temperature, humidity, and air pressure throughout itself.
What are the 4 types of air masses in North America? Maritime tropical Continental tropical Maritime polar Continental polar
What is a maritime tropical air mass? A warm, humid air mass that forms over oceans near the tropics.
What is a maritime polar air mass? A cool, humid air mass that forms over the icy cold North Pacific and North Atlantic oceans.
What is a continental tropical air mass? A hot, dry air mass that forms only in summer over dry areas of the Southwest and northern Mexico.
What is a continental polar air mass? A cold and dry air mass that forms in central and northern Canada and Alaska.
What is a front? The area where the air masses meet and do not mix.
Name the 4 types of fronts. Warm front, cold front, stationary front, occluded front.
What is a cold front? When a rapidly moving cold air mass runs into a slowly moving warm air mass, the denser cold air slides under the lighter warm air. The warm air is pushed upward and a cold front forms.
What is a warm front? When a moving warm air mass collides with a slowly moving cold air mass.
What is a stationary front? When cold and warm air masses meet, but neither one has enough force to move the other.
What is an occluded front? When a warm air mass is caught between two cooler air masses. The denser cool air masses move underneath the less dense warm air mass and push it upward.
What is a storm? Violent disturbance in the atmosphere.
What are thunderstorm clouds called? Cumulonimbus clouds, or thunderheads.
What is a tornado? A rapidly whirling, funnel-shaped cloud that reaches down from a storm cloud to touch Earth’s surface.
What is a hurricane? A tropical storm that has winds of 119 kilometers per hour or higher.
