Water Cycle and Weathering (EPISD 8th grade)

Mechanical Weathering caused by the physical forces of nature
Chemical Weathering caused by reactions that break down rock
Erosion When small pieces of rock are carried away
Sediment Small pieces of rock moved by erosion
Deposition When sediments are moved and deposited into a new place
Delta A land form at the mouth of a river caused by deposition
Sun The engine of the water cycle
Evaporation When liquid water is changed to water vapor
Condensation When water vapor collects in the sky
Precipitation Rain, snow, sleet or hail
Transpiration Water evaporates off the leaves of plants
Percolation When water soaks into the ground
Collection Water that gathers together in one place
Runoff Water that doesn’t soak in but moves downhill to a stream
Aquifer An underground collection of water
Watershed An area of land where the water all drains to the same place
Rain A common form of precipitation
Hail Frozen ice that falls from the sky
Sleet Frozen rain
Snow Santa’s favorite form of precipitation
Water vapor The gas form of water
