The Breathing System
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Why do we breathe ? | To get oxygen to our cells so that they can make energy |
| What is respiration ? | The release of energy from food |
| What is breathing ? | The way organisms take in oxygen for respiration and get rid of carbon dioxide and water |
| What are Capillaries ? | Tiny blood vessels that connect larger blood vessels |
| What is the respiration chemical equation ? | Gucose + Oxygen -> Carbon dioxide + water + ENERGY |
| What is gaseous exchange ? | 350 million alveoli per lung Alveoli have very thin walls Capillaries have very thin walls Oxygen in alveoli moves through walls and into the blood of capillaries Carbon dioxide in the blood of capillaries moves through walls and into alveoli |
| What makes alveoli so good at gaseous exchange ? | There are loads of them - which creates a large syrface area for it to happen They have thin walls - Cappilaries also have thin walls, this allows gases to diffuse through easily |
| What is our body actually doing when it sneezes ? | Allows waste to exit through the nose, such as dirt, pollen, dust, smoke frim the air etc |
| Explain what Aerobic respiration is ! | Swimming ; Happens in the presence of oxygen and releases more energy than anaerobic respiration Glucose + Oxygen = Carbon dioxide + water + energy |
| Explain what Anaerobic respiration is. ! | Happens in the absence of oxygen, during strenuous exercise The buildup of lactic acid causes muscle soreness Glucose = Lactic acid + energy |
| What do we do when we Inhale ? | Intercostal muscles contract - ribs move up and out Diaphragm contracts and moves down Volume in the chest area increases (there is more space) Pressure decrease Air is sucked in |
| What do we do when we Exhale ? | Intercostal muscles relax - ribs move down and in Diaphragm relaxes and moves down Volume in the chest area decreases (there is less space) Pressure increases Air is forced out |
| What are Waste Products in respiration ? | Products that are not used or needed For respiration they woukd be carbon dioxide and water |
| Nose | Filters the air with its tiny hairs |
| Mouth | Wettens the air so that it is dry when it goes down to the lungs |
| Pharynx | The voice box |
| Trachea | Carries air down to the Bronchi |
| Bronchi (Bronchus) | Tubes that carry air to each lung |
| Bronchiole | Small tubes that branch from each bronchus that carry air to the air sacs inside the lung |
| Alveoli | Tiny air sacs where gaseous excahnge takes place |
| Diaphragm | Sheet of muscle beneath the lungs and ribs that goes up and down when we breathe which causes the volume of the chest to increase and decrease |
| Intercostal muscles | In between the rib bones Causes the chest to expand and contract |
| Ribs | Protects the lungs |
| Lungs | Gaseous exchange |
